The beaches around SurfWatch range from wide grey sand beaches to boulder/sand mixed beaches to no beach at all.

In the north part of the coast, there are beaches so long you could walk for a couple of days, and see no one else’s footprints. Beachcombing produces beautiful ocean polished paua chips, raw paua shells, other shells, stone treasures including the odd agate in the Waima (Ure) River area, plus odd and interesting bits of driftwood, and sometimes sand drifted bottles.

A great days journey starts at the Waima Mouth, and after about 1 /2 hours walk takes you to an isolated seal colony. Walking in the deep sand is tiring, be warned!
